Houston’s George Bush Airport Expands: New Terminal D Opening Soon!

Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) is set to enhance its travel experience by opening an expanded Terminal D at the end of this month. This exciting expansion follows years of development and costs around $1 billion. Consequently, officials believe it will significantly boost Houston’s economy.

The new West Pier will have six gates for widebody aircraft and ten gates for narrowbody planes. This addition aims to increase the airport’s international flight capacity while also creating over 200 new jobs.

Reports indicate that the construction of IAH’s Terminal D West Pier has finished. Thus, it will open to travelers on October 22nd. The facility promises a world-class experience. Moreover, it features state-of-the-art gates, comfortable seating, and numerous retail and dining options. Travelers can enjoy local favorites like Annie Café & Bar and The Kitchen, along with 16 new venues.

City officials highlight this expansion as a key investment in Houston’s future. They focus on enhancing the passenger experience by incorporating modern amenities. As a result, this project improves the airport and reinforces Houston’s status as a world-class city. Ultimately, it will attract more visitors from across the globe.

Previously, the airport demolished the north section of Terminal C in 2020 to facilitate this expansion. Despite ongoing construction, IAH continued to operate normally. It even broke annual passenger records during this time. Over 3,000 workers dedicated more than a million hours to this project without any safety incidents.

Looking ahead, the next phase of the IAH Terminal Redevelopment Program (ITRP) involves creating a new International Central Processor (ICP). This facility will centralize all international check-in areas. Consequently, it will streamline operations and allow Terminal D to function exclusively as a gate concourse. The ICP is expected to be completed in phases between late 2023 and summer 2025.

The first phase will transition United Airlines operations from Terminal E to the new ICP. Other international airlines will follow in subsequent phases. Therefore, this plan will further enhance travel efficiency and improve the overall experience for passengers arriving in Houston.
