Alaska Airlines’ Promise to Hawaiian Airlines: Is the Brand Safe?

Alaska Airlines has finalized its acquisition of Hawaiian Airlines in an all-cash deal worth $1 billion. The total transaction value reaches $1.9 billion when including Hawaiian Airlines’ debt, which Alaska Airlines will assume.

What the Merger Means for Alaska Airlines

With this merger, Alaska Airlines will become the primary operating entity, expanding its reach to more domestic and international destinations. The acquisition also enhances its membership in the Oneworld alliance, broadening travel options for guests.

Approval and Future Plans

The merger received the green light from the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Department of Transportation (DOT) in August and September, respectively. Alaska Airlines is now working with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to secure a single air operator’s certificate (AOC). Initially, both airlines will operate separately, including distinct reservation systems and loyalty programs, but they plan to integrate these systems soon.

The Future of Hawaiian Airlines Brand

Alaska Airlines has committed to maintaining the Hawaiian Airlines brand despite its history of retiring acquired brands, such as Virgin America in 2019. Hawaiian Airlines, with its nearly 100-year history and deep-rooted connection to Hawaii, will continue to operate under its well-established name. This decision reflects the brand’s significant value and its role in representing Hawaii’s unique culture and identity.

Looking Ahead for Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines

The merger aims to combine the strengths of both airlines, offering improved services and greater investments in passenger experience. Alaska Airlines looks forward to preserving the distinctive qualities of Hawaiian Airlines while expanding its network and enhancing travel options for customers worldwide.
