United Airlines will resume flights between Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) and Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) this December. After 11 years, the airline is returning to this crucial route.

Previously, Delta Air Lines dominated this route as the only operator. However, United’s return gives travelers more options during the busy holiday season.

Moreover, United plans to launch the route on December 19. The airline will operate daily flights using various aircraft. Passengers will fly on the Airbus A319, A320, or Boeing 737-700. Specifically, the flights will depart IAD at 17:30 and arrive in SLC by 20:00. Additionally, the return flight leaves SLC at 23:30 and arrives at IAD at 05:30.

In December, United will operate 26 flights, providing about 3,372 seats. Then, in January 2025, the airline will increase to 62 flights, offering 9,060 seats. Furthermore, February will see 56 flights with 9,063 seats due to the Boeing 737 MAX 9’s higher capacity.

In March, United will switch to the Boeing 737-800, which will provide more than 10,300 seats on 62 flights. Flight times will remain the same. Notably, many in the industry were surprised by United’s return, as this route was one of the airline’s top unserved markets. United last operated this route on December 3, 2013. Consequently, passengers often flew from other airports to reach Salt Lake City.

While United starts its flights, Delta will continue its operations in December. In January, both airlines will operate 62 flights each, thereby increasing competition. Delta will offer 9,920 seats on all Boeing 737-800 flights.

Ultimately, this competition benefits travelers by providing more choices and potentially lower fares. Moreover, United’s return strengthens connections between Washington, D.C., and Salt Lake City for business and leisure travelers.
