Examining the USA’s Largest Unserved Routes to India!

Between July 2023 and July 2024, over 5.9 million passengers traveled between the US and India. This average equates to over 8,000 travelers daily in each direction. Most travelers—about 86%—connect through other hubs, especially in the Gulf and Europe.

The US-India route represents the largest unserved long-haul market globally. However, various factors limit non-stop flights. These factors include lengthy distances, low-profit margins, and restrictions on flying over Russian airspace for US carriers. Additionally, Air India faces challenges with limited widebody aircraft, as its Airbus A350s gradually replace older Boeing 777s.

Despite these obstacles, the demand for direct flights remains high. The top ten unserved routes between the US and India show significant potential. Seattle to Delhi ranks first, with 129,000 round-trip passengers in the past year. This route is the shortest among the top ten but boasts the lowest average fare of $550.

In early 2024, Air India expanded its route map by adding Seattle, Dallas/Fort Worth, and Los Angeles. This move sparked speculation about future non-stop flights. Although Air India confirmed plans for Dallas/Fort Worth and Los Angeles, Seattle’s inclusion remains uncertain.

The second largest unserved market is Dallas/Fort Worth to Hyderabad, with 99,000 passengers. This route spans 7,793 nautical miles each way. Comparatively, Singapore Airlines operates a similar distance, but with higher fare yields. Operating long-haul flights requires substantial premium traffic to ensure profitability.

Travelers from New York’s JFK to Hyderabad show another substantial demand, with 97,000 passengers. This route has historical significance, as Air India previously operated flights connecting Hyderabad and JFK. Washington Dulles to Hyderabad and New York JFK to Ahmedabad also demonstrate strong passenger interest.

As airlines reassess their strategies, the demand for non-stop flights to India will prompt discussions about future routes. Airlines must recognize this opportunity and adapt to market needs. With Air India’s gradual upgrades to its fleet, the hope for more direct flights between the US and India remains strong.

The unserved routes to India indicate a significant market opportunity. Enhancing connectivity between the US and India could lead to better travel experiences for millions of passengers.
