Air New Zealand celebrates 30 years of direct flights between Auckland and Queenstown. This service has transformed travel in New Zealand, offering daily connections since October 17, 1994.
In the past decade, Air New Zealand has transported over seven million passengers on this route. This summer, the airline will operate up to 116 return flights weekly, increasing to 156 during the Christmas period.
Scott Carr, General Manager Domestic, remembers the launch as a significant milestone. Connecting Auckland directly to the scenic Southern Lakes region revolutionized travel options. Today, this route ranks as the third-most frequented service on the airline’s domestic network.
This service also serves as a vital cargo link. Air New Zealand transports significant amounts of cargo, including lobster, which has been shipped since 2013. Annually, about 250 tonnes of this crustacean travel north from Queenstown.
To commemorate this anniversary, travelers today will enjoy special treats onboard. Each passenger will receive extra Cookie Time treats, while select flights offer adventure experiences like scenic cruises and thrilling bungy jumps.
Queenstown Airport celebrates this 30-year partnership, as nearly half of its passengers fly this route. The direct service fosters strong connections between New Zealand’s largest city and the Southern Lakes region.
Air New Zealand’s early adoption of RNP flight procedures has also improved reliability for flights into Queenstown Airport, enhancing the region’s accessibility.
The Queenstown Mayor emphasizes Air New Zealand’s role in connecting residents with family, friends, and job opportunities. This connection also allows international visitors to explore New Zealand’s stunning landscapes.
Air New Zealand has transformed travel between Auckland and Queenstown over the last 30 years. As the airline continues to expand services, it remains committed to connecting travelers with New Zealand’s breathtaking beauty.
