Qantas Group plans to enhance its operational capacity by investing over AU$40 million in training and safety programs. This investment comes as the airline adds more than 100 new aircraft to its fleet. Additionally, Qantas needs to recruit 8,500 operational staff over the next decade to support its growth.
To support its expansion, the airline has outlined three key initiatives to foster a new generation of aviation professionals. Specifically, these initiatives include establishing the Qantas Group Safety Academy, creating a new ground training facility in Sydney, and expanding its scholarship offerings to boost diversity within the pilot workforce.
The Qantas Group Safety Academy will launch in 2025. Its primary goal is to provide comprehensive safety education credentials. Furthermore, this academy, in partnership with Griffith University and RMIT University, will develop safety leaders across various industries. Initially, the academy will offer micro-credentials in key areas such as risk management and cyber safety.
Moreover, the new Sydney Ground Training Facility will open in mid-2026. This facility will provide emergency procedure training for over 5,000 pilots and cabin crew each year. In addition, it will feature advanced training equipment, including virtual reality spaces and specialized simulators. Similarly, a ground training facility will also emerge in Perth by mid-2025 to enhance training resources for QantasLink and Jetstar.
Qantas also commits to increasing diversity among its pilot ranks. Starting in 2025, the airline will double the number of scholarships for female students and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. Consequently, these scholarships, valued at up to AU$30,000, will attract a broader talent pool to the Qantas Group Pilot Academy.
This proactive approach effectively addresses the gender imbalance in aviation, where women make up only 4% of pilots globally. Currently, Qantas boasts over 7% female pilots. However, the airline seeks to improve these numbers through its scholarship program.
Overall, Qantas’s investment in training and diversity significantly strengthens its operational capabilities and fosters an inclusive environment within the aviation industry.
