Etihad Airways Aims for Growth: In Talks with Airbus and Boeing to Expand Fleet!

Etihad Airways is taking significant steps to expand its fleet. The airline is in discussions with Airbus and Boeing for widebody aircraft. Specifically, the Airbus A350 and Boeing 777X are strong contenders for this expansion. With ambitious plans to double its size, Etihad Airways aims to enhance its operational capabilities over the coming years.

According to reports, these talks are still in the early stages. Consequently, a deal could take months to finalize. The upcoming Paris Air Show, scheduled for June 16, is a potential platform for announcements. However, Etihad has not purchased aircraft at this event since 2007. The airline typically prefers to announce deals outside of industry trade shows or during the Dubai Airshow.

In the past, Etihad Airways has made significant aircraft orders at various events. For instance, at the 2008 Farnborough International Airshow, it placed firm orders for 20 Airbus A320s, 25 A350s, and ten A380s. Furthermore, it also ordered 35 Boeing 787s and ten 777-300ER aircraft. In subsequent years, the airline continued to diversify its fleet with strategic purchases, including being a launch customer for the 777X.

Currently, Etihad Airways operates a fleet of 102 aircraft. This includes a mix of models, such as A320s, A350s, and several 787s. However, the airline has faced challenges with delivery delays from manufacturers. The CEO expressed frustration over the limited availability of new aircraft, highlighting it as a significant hurdle for the airline.

In response to these challenges, Etihad Airways plans to invest up to $7 billion by 2030 to double its size. This investment also encompasses refurbishing the interiors of its aging 777-300ER aircraft. The CEO noted that the average age of these planes is around 13.6 years, making cabin upgrades essential.

Overall, Etihad Airways is focused on future growth. By securing new orders and upgrading its fleet, the airline is poised for a stronger presence in the aviation market.
