An Airbus A320neo operated by Spirit Airlines was struck by gunfire while approaching Port-au-Prince, Haiti, on Monday. This unsettling incident caused the flight crew to reroute the aircraft to Santiago, Dominican Republic, for safety. One flight attendant suffered minor injuries and received medical attention following the event.
The flight, NK951, had taken off from Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport earlier that day. After reaching cruising altitude, the aircraft began its descent toward Toussaint Louverture International Airport in Haiti. As the plane prepared for landing at 800 feet, the crew aborted the approach, ascending to 8,000 feet and diverting to the Dominican Republic. The aircraft safely landed at Cibao International Airport after a short diversion.
Upon inspection, authorities found multiple bullet holes on the plane’s underside, as well as damage in the cabin near the door and overhead bins. Fortunately, no passenger injuries were reported. Spirit Airlines confirmed that a replacement aircraft would take the passengers back to Fort Lauderdale once available. They also emphasized their commitment to passenger safety, suspending services to Port-au-Prince until further evaluation.
This event is part of a larger pattern of escalating violence in Haiti. Gang-related activities have increasingly disrupted life in the country, affecting both citizens and international flights. The United States and other airlines have responded by rerouting flights and suspending services to the region.
Spirit Airlines will continue to monitor the situation in Haiti, ensuring that future flights adhere to the highest safety standards. The airline’s quick response reflects it’s dedication to the safety of all passengers and crew members.
The safety of Spirit Airlines passengers and team members remains a top priority. Spirit Airlines continues to work closely with relevant authorities to assess the situation further.
