Canada’s northern regions depend on safe airports to connect remote communities. Thompson Regional Airport serves over 37 northern communities, including 15 remote Indigenous areas. The Government of Canada has committed $30 million to improve infrastructure at Thompson Regional Airport.

The investment, through the Airports Capital Assistance Program, will fund a new apron and two taxiways. One taxiway will be paved, and the other will remain gravel. The project also upgrades essential drainage and electrical systems. These changes stabilize the infrastructure and ensure year-round operations despite the rising temperatures and permafrost destabilization.

Engineers will build the new infrastructure on stable bedrock. They will also apply innovative techniques to reinforce the permafrost. These improvements are necessary because the existing apron and taxiways have weakened. With these upgrades, Thompson Airport will maintain safety and reliability for passengers and workers.
