Tulum International Airport, also known as Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport, is celebrating its first year of operation. Since opening on December 1st, 2023, Tulum has quickly positioned itself as a crucial gateway to the Mexican Caribbean. Located 100 km south of Cancun, Tulum serves as a supplemental airport, alleviating congestion at the busy Cancun International Airport.
In its first year, Tulum exceeded expectations, welcoming its one-millionth passenger earlier this month. The airport now anticipates serving up to 1.3 million passengers by the end of the year, nearly doubling its initial target. Tulum’s growing success has been driven by the strong airline presence, offering nearly 1.5 million seats and thousands of flights, connecting domestic and international destinations.
Viva Aerobus has emerged as the largest carrier at Tulum, with a significant lead over other airlines. The Mexican low-cost carrier flew more than 500,000 seats across five routes. The airline connects Tulum to major cities in Mexico, including Monterrey, Guadalajara, and Mexico City. American Airlines follows closely, bringing in passengers from three U.S. hubs: Charlotte, Dallas/Fort Worth, and Miami. Tulum’s connection to the U.S. market has been a major contributor to its early success.
United Airlines is expanding its presence this winter with new routes from Houston, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Newark. The airline will also introduce service from Denver, further enhancing connectivity. Aeromexico and Delta Air Lines have also strengthened Tulum’s network, offering daily and seasonal flights from major hubs.
As Tulum continues to thrive, its role as a secondary hub in the region is clear. The growing number of international routes, including flights from Canada and soon Europe, shows the airport’s increasing importance on the global travel map. Expect Tulum to continue growing, as airlines and passengers flock to this vibrant Caribbean destination.
