In December 2024, Southwest Airlines plans to operate 3,838 daily flights, a decrease from last year. This drop represents an 8.9% reduction, with most flights—3,571—remaining domestic. Southwest holds a significant portion of the U.S. domestic market, accounting for 17.1% of all flights. However, the airline’s all-Boeing 737 fleet means it commands 21.1% of available domestic seats during this festive period.
According to recent data, Southwest will serve 117 airports in December, a slight decrease from 121 last year. The airline has removed certain locations, including Bellingham, Cozumel, Houston Intercontinental, and Syracuse. These airports no longer feature in Southwest’s 2024 routes. Notably, the carrier hasn’t added new airports this year. Among these 117, 104 are within the U.S., including Puerto Rico, spread across 44 states. California leads with the highest number of airports, hosting 13 in total, followed by Florida and Texas. Despite having the most airports, no Californian airport made the top 10 for Southwest this December.
Denver remains Southwest’s busiest airport, although the airline has scaled back services by 14.1% from the previous year. This reduction stands out more than the airline’s overall service cut. The main reason for this decline is a reduction in frequencies for certain routes. While Denver continues to dominate with 502 roundtrip flights, other key airports include Las Vegas, Baltimore, and Dallas Love, each serving crucial routes across the country. Phoenix also sees a notable increase in flights compared to last year, with a 6.8% rise in services.
Southwest Airlines’ most popular routes this December feature strong competition for top spots. Notably, the Honolulu-Kahului route takes the lead, surpassing Denver-Phoenix, which was last year’s favorite. As part of its seasonal offerings, Southwest operates numerous one-off routes, ensuring travelers can access key destinations. With 860 routes scheduled, Southwest continues to meet demand with daily flights to a broad range of locations, ensuring its presence across both domestic and international markets this festive season.
