On November 26th, 2024, Sun Country Airlines faced an unexpected challenge when one of its Boeing 737-800 aircraft experienced engine issues shortly after takeoff from Phoenix. The flight, SCX606, was headed from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport to Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. After just 15 minutes, the plane returned to Phoenix for safety reasons. The aircraft landed safely, and no injuries occurred.
The flight took off from Phoenix at 5:12 pm local time and circled briefly before returning. Sun Country Airlines confirmed an issue with one of the two CFM56 engines. The pilots followed standard procedures to ensure a safe return and landing. The aircraft landed on runway 26, and all passengers exited safely.
The Boeing 737-800, registered N849SY, joined Sun Country Airlines in April 2022. Norwegian Air Shuttle previously owned the aircraft. After takeoff, passengers heard a loud bang and saw a flash of light. The airline is investigating the cause of the engine issue.
After landing, passengers exited the aircraft and waited for a new flight to Minneapolis the next morning. Sun Country Airlines quickly arranged a replacement aircraft. Despite the issue, the airline prioritized passenger safety and comfort, ensuring excellent customer service.
As the investigation continues, Sun Country Airlines remains focused on safety and reliable service.
