Virgin Australia recently applied to the US Department of Transportation (DOT) for a codeshare agreement with Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) after SAS joined SkyTeam. As a result, this partnership will improve travel options between the US and UK, offering passengers seamless connections and access to both airlines’ networks.
Virgin Australia asked the DOT to allow its flights to display SAS’s SK designator code. The application focuses on services between the UK and the US, particularly from London Heathrow. Moreover, both airlines aim to begin the partnership quickly and have requested an expedited approval process.
The codeshare was announced in October, and the services launched soon after. Passengers flying with Virgin Australia can now connect via London Heathrow to SAS’s destinations in Scandinavia, including Copenhagen, Bergen, and Oslo. Furthermore, SAS customers can connect through Virgin Australia’s hubs to destinations in the UK and Europe.
Both airlines want to strengthen their positions in the competitive transatlantic market. In addition, the codeshare deal will improve connectivity and offer more choices for travelers. Virgin Australia aims to expand its presence, while SAS plans to extend its reach into key markets.
Although both airlines are part of the SkyTeam alliance, this move will align Virgin Australia further with SkyTeam’s goals, by creating more opportunities for travelers. Consequently, the partnership will enhance benefits for frequent flyers, offering flexibility and convenient connections.
Virgin Australia’s codeshare with SAS will attract more traffic, increase competition, and offer more travel options. As a result, travelers will enjoy simpler bookings, making this collaboration a significant development in the airline industry.
