American Airlines has suspended all flights to Haiti indefinitely after several gunfire incidents. Last month, gunshots hit multiple US airlines flying over Haiti. As a result, the airline extended its suspension. Initially, it had planned to stop Miami to Port-au-Prince flights until February. Now, the suspension will continue, with no immediate plans for resumption.
The suspension follows an incident where bullets hit an American Airlines aircraft while landing. The airline resumed Haiti flights earlier this year after the country faced instability. However, recent security risks prompted the airline to reconsider safety conditions. At present, American Airlines has no set date for restarting its Haiti services. They may begin flights again in late 2025.
Following the November attacks, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) banned US airlines from flying to Haiti. The FAA later eased this restriction, permitting flights to northern airports. However, flights to Port-au-Prince remain restricted. Despite the update, US airlines have shown little interest in resuming Haiti operations.
These incidents have caused airlines like Spirit Airlines, JetBlue, and American Airlines to hesitate. In November, Spirit and JetBlue aircraft were also hit by bullets while approaching Haiti. These events highlight the growing dangers of flying to Haiti amid ongoing violence. Currently, none of the airlines have plans to return to the country. Although the FAA lifted some restrictions, airlines are not rushing to resume Haiti flights. The risk of further incidents remains a significant concern.
