The accident occurred on December 25, 2024, when the Embraer 190AR flight, traveling from Baku to Grozny, collided with a Russian air-defense missile near Grozny, Russia. The aircraft sustained severe damage but continued flying before crash-landing near Aktau, Kazakhstan. Tragically, 38 people died, and 29 others sustained injuries. The crash raises serious concerns about civilian aircraft safety in conflict zones.
The IATA demands that the investigation follow international aviation protocols, especially Annex 13 of the Chicago Convention. This includes publishing an interim report within 30 days to clarify the accident’s causes. In response, Azerbaijan Airlines has suspended flights between Baku and Grozny and Baku and Makhachkala until the investigation concludes.
