Air India is actively expanding its flight network in North America, eyeing new destinations as it enhances its service to the US and Canada. Currently, the airline operates 11 routes in North America, connecting major Indian cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru to key hubs such as New York, San Francisco, Chicago, Toronto, and Vancouver. This expansion aims to meet growing demand and improve options for travelers.
New Routes and Destination Plans
While Air India has a strong network, it has teased plans for new routes to Dallas/Fort Worth, Los Angeles, and Seattle. Although the exact start dates remain unconfirmed, the airline aims to revitalize its service to Los Angeles, which it previously accessed via Frankfurt. Boston is also a potential new destination, reflecting the airline’s commitment to expanding its North American presence.
Market Dominance and Flight Capacity
Air India will operate three-quarters of all non-stop seats between India and North America from October 2024 to February 2025. When including Star Alliance partners like Air Canada and United Airlines, this figure rises to 94%, underscoring the alliance’s strength in this competitive market. Despite this, Air India holds only a 13% market share for all passengers flying between India and North America. This is largely due to the multitude of one-stop options available through European and Middle Eastern hubs.
Modern Fleet for Enhanced Travel Experience
Air India operates these routes primarily with Boeing 777s and 787-8s. Its fleet includes a mix of aircraft, such as 328-seat 777-300ERs and 342-seat 777-300ERs, previously flown by other airlines. Additionally, the airline’s 787-8 Dreamliners, configured with 256 seats, serve select routes.
Introducing the A350-900 for Long-Haul Flights
In an exciting development, Air India will soon upgrade its long-haul operations with the Airbus A350-900. The airline’s 316-seat A350s are set to debut on the Delhi-New York JFK route in November 2024, followed by the Delhi-Newark route in January 2025. This move responds to customer feedback about the outdated interiors of older aircraft, aiming to improve comfort and competitiveness.
Increasing Capacity on Popular Routes
The Toronto market is especially significant for Air India. In 2023, approximately 760,000 passengers flew directly between Toronto and Delhi. To meet this demand, Air India plans to increase its Delhi-Toronto service from 10 weekly flights to double daily starting in early November. This expansion positions Air India to compete directly with Air Canada’s service on the same route.
Connecting Passengers to Southeast Asia
With the increased frequency of the Toronto route, Air India also aims to facilitate more connections to Southeast Asia. Destinations like Bangkok, Dhaka, and Ho Chi Minh City will become more accessible, with connection times as short as 75 minutes in some cases. As Air India ramps up its operations, passengers can expect competitive pricing and promotional offers, enhancing their travel options across these regions.
