United Airlines Settles Racial Discrimination Lawsuit

United Airlines has settled a racial discrimination lawsuit involving an ex-employee of Asian origin. In 2021, a manager used a racial slur against the employee at a Denver catering facility. This incident led to significant actions from the airline.

The former employee, Alsunbayar Davaabat, faced verbal and physical abuse. He will receive $99,000 and 75,000 flight miles as compensation. This settlement addresses the discrimination he experienced while working as a driver.

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) highlighted the hostile work environment Davaabat faced. United Airlines delayed its investigation into the incident for over a month. This delay attracted criticism and led to policy changes at the airline.

United Airlines will now revise its workplace violence policy. The airline will ensure that reports of physical threats are investigated within 72 hours. This change aims to create a safer working environment for all employees.

The incident happened during the COVID-19 pandemic, with strict mask mandates in place. The conflict began when Davaabat and a coworker were told to wear masks after their meal. The manager responded with racial slurs and physical aggression, causing Davaabat to fear for his safety. He eventually resigned.

United Airlines has taken action against the manager involved and offered re-employment to Davaabat, which he declined. This case highlights the need for swift action in addressing workplace discrimination and ensuring a respectful environment for all employees.
