Lufthansa Targets Air Europa to Grow in Southern Europe

Lufthansa is expanding its European reach by pursuing a 20% stake in Air Europa. This move follows its recent investments in airBaltic and ITA Airways. As a result, the German carrier aims to strengthen its presence in Southern Europe, tapping into the lucrative South American routes.

Air Europa, Spain’s third-largest airline, is actively seeking partnerships to improve its financial position. Its strategic location in both Spain and Latin America has drawn significant attention. After IAG abandoned its acquisition bid due to regulatory obstacles, Lufthansa quickly stepped in with an offer to acquire 20% of the airline.

Reports indicate that discussions are progressing. The Hidalgo family, which controls Air Europa through Globalia, seems to be leaning toward a deal with Lufthansa. In fact, Air Europa has a pressing need to expand its capital to manage debt while simultaneously improving its market position.

Lufthansa’s interest in Air Europa primarily stems from the airline’s strong presence in Latin America. Air Europa serves 44 destinations across the region, focusing on high-demand routes to Brazil, Mexico, and Argentina. Therefore, Lufthansa is eager to capitalize on this opportunity to strengthen its ties to transatlantic markets.

The airline operates a modern fleet, including Boeing 787 Dreamliners, and plans to expand it further. This makes Air Europa an even more attractive target for Lufthansa, which aims to solidify its position in the South American market. Additionally, Lufthansa’s recent investments in ITA Airways and airBaltic demonstrate its commitment to expanding its European network.

Although Air France-KLM and IAG have shown interest in acquiring Air Europa, Lufthansa’s proposal appears to align more closely with the airline’s goals. Thus, Lufthansa’s approach is gaining momentum.

By acquiring a stake in Air Europa, Lufthansa will not only strengthen its competitive position in European markets but also enhance its footprint in key transatlantic routes. This move will further solidify its global airline portfolio.
