Flights Canceled, Travelers Stuck—British Columbia Hit Hard by Snowstorm

Heavy snowfall has caused major travel disruptions across British Columbia, affecting airports and leaving passengers stranded. Vancouver International Airport (YVR), Victoria International Airport (YYJ), and regional hubs are struggling to maintain operations. Since the region usually experiences mild winters, unexpected snowstorms create significant challenges for airlines. Therefore, flight delays and cancellations have increased rapidly. To assist affected passengers, airlines have introduced flexible ticket policies.

Air Canada and WestJet have taken immediate action to help travelers. Air Canada allowed passengers flying on February 3 and 4, 2025, to modify their tickets without extra fees. Since flights to and from Vancouver and Victoria remained affected, checking flight status online was essential before heading to the airport. Similarly, WestJet extended flexible options for passengers traveling through Vancouver, Nanaimo, and Abbotsford. In addition, the airline included travelers affected by storms in Ottawa and Montreal.

Although conditions have slightly improved, some disruptions continue at major airports. Because delays persist, passengers must check airline websites frequently for updates. Moreover, arriving early at the airport can help travelers avoid last-minute issues caused by rescheduled flights. Given the unpredictable weather, preparing for further delays remains necessary.

British Columbia rarely experiences extreme snowfall. Unlike other Canadian provinces, the region lacks winter-ready infrastructure, which further complicates transportation. Consequently, roadways and public transit have also suffered, worsening the overall chaos. Meanwhile, airports continue to manage de-icing and snow removal efforts, causing additional delays.

Since the situation remains uncertain, travelers should take advantage of flexible rebooking options. Additionally, staying updated on advisories and weather reports can help reduce travel headaches. While snowfall continues to impact flights, planning ahead can minimize disruptions and keep journeys smooth.
