United Airlines is bringing back its direct flights between Albuquerque and Washington Dulles. Starting in late May, the airline will reconnect these two cities after a decade-long break. This move makes United Airlines the second carrier to link Albuquerque with the Washington–Baltimore area.
The airline initially plans to use an Airbus A319 for the route. Later, it will switch to a Boeing 737-700, keeping the service active until December. However, the schedule could change depending on demand. United Airlines first launched this route in 2006 but stopped in 2014. Now, it aims to tap into the growing demand for travel between these regions.
While United Airlines stepped away from this route, Southwest Airlines remained active. It has been operating flights between Albuquerque and Baltimore/Washington International since 2001. However, in 2020, the airline temporarily cut the service. By 2021, it slowly resumed operations, increasing flights to a daily schedule. Recently, it even exceeded daily flights in certain months.
Southwest Airlines uses different aircraft for this route, including the Boeing 737-700, 737-800, and 737 MAX 8. These planes can carry between 143 and 175 passengers. Despite United Airlines’ return, Southwest Airlines remains dominant at Albuquerque International Sunport.
In June, airlines will operate 614 weekly flights from Albuquerque. Southwest Airlines will handle 41.2% of this traffic, making it the busiest airline at the airport. American Airlines and United Airlines follow, with 116 and 97 weekly departures, respectively.
United Airlines continues expanding at Albuquerque International Sunport. The airline plans to add more flights, increasing seat availability by nearly 40% compared to last year. It serves five major destinations from Albuquerque, including Chicago, Denver, Houston, San Francisco, and Washington Dulles. Passengers will travel on various aircraft, ensuring flexibility in flight schedules.
