Previously, avianca flew between Guatemala City La Aurora International Airport and Miami International Airport using Airbus A319 and A320 aircraft. However, due to intense competition from American Airlines and Frontier Airlines, passenger demand fluctuated, leading Avianca to withdraw in 2022. At that time, American Airlines dominated the route with 21 weekly flights, while Frontier Airlines maintained a limited schedule. Consequently, Avianca struggled to maintain steady operations.

Since avianca’s exit, American Airlines has consistently maintained its flight schedule, even increasing flights during peak seasons. Meanwhile, Frontier Airlines has adjusted its approach, offering seasonal flights based on passenger demand. With this relaunch, Avianca aims to regain market share and provide travelers with a reliable alternative. This route revival is part of avianca’s broader strategy to expand its presence in the United States. In addition to Guatemala City-Miami, the airline has recently introduced several Florida-bound routes from key Central and South American airports. Specifically, avianca has launched flights from Bogotá to Tampa, Medellín to Fort Lauderdale, and San José to Miami. Therefore, these expansions highlight avianca’s commitment to strengthening international travel options.
