Avelo Drops Concord Routes, Shifts Focus to ICE Charter Flights

Avelo Airlines has pulled the plug on five flight routes from Concord-Padgett Regional Airport, shifting its focus instead to government charter operations. The budget carrier, known for fast expansions and quick market exits, is now leaning into a long-term contract with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). This move comes after low passenger demand led to underwhelming bookings across the scrapped routes.

The decision affects destinations such as Nashville, Washington D.C., and Detroit. Some of these flights had launched only weeks before the announcement. Avelo Airlines had expected higher demand but saw booking trends drop below expectations. Rather than continuing with loss-making operations, the airline chose to redirect its resources toward a more profitable federal deal.

Even though the airline cut flights, it confirmed that its Concord crew base will stay active. Avelo Airlines plans to maintain its other services from the airport, especially flights connecting to cities in the Northeast. These operations will continue while the airline explores strategic expansions elsewhere.

What makes this change significant is the nature of Avelo Airlines’ pivot. The carrier is entering the federal charter market by offering deportation flights for ICE. This agreement marks a major step for Avelo as it diversifies its revenue beyond commercial passengers. Charter flights under this contract will operate from a new hub in Mesa, Arizona, starting May 12.

The airline’s shift reveals a business model focused on data-driven decisions. Avelo adjusts quickly to demand shifts, favoring profitable ventures over underperforming routes. While this strategy might frustrate some local travelers, it reflects a broader trend in aviation where agility is key to survival.
