Starting May 1, 2025, this system will first roll out at Chicago O’Hare and Los Angeles International—both major travel hubs.
To detect trouble early, flight attendants will watch for clear signs of intoxication. For instance, they will note slurred speech, poor balance, or erratic actions. If two crew members observe these behaviors, they will instantly trigger a private “huddle.” During this short meeting, the crew, flight operations, and airport staff will quickly decide on further action.
As a result, United Airlines can stop problems before they reach the cabin. Instead of waiting for mid-air conflicts, the team will act fast at the gate. This new process reduces in-flight disruptions and keeps the cabin environment peaceful for everyone.
To support the decision-making process, the airline uses a simple traffic light model. While green means normal behavior, yellow suggests mild concern. Red, however, points to clear intoxication, demanding immediate attention. Through this system, the airline creates a balanced and fair approach.
Moreover, United Airlines avoids embarrassing confrontations by handling the issue discreetly. The huddle takes place away from passengers to protect privacy. Consequently, the airline maintains calm on board without compromising safety or staffing needs.
