Wizz Air Shifts Focus After Milan-Abu Dhabi Route Cancellation

Wizz Air has decided to cancel its Milan-Abu Dhabi route, originally scheduled to begin on June 2, 2025. This decision follows a careful assessment of passenger demand, which fell short of expectations. The airline will focus on more profitable and in-demand routes, marking a shift in its long-term strategy.

The Milan-Abu Dhabi route was part of Wizz Air’s ambitious plan to expand its network with the new Airbus A321XLR. This aircraft, designed for longer flights at lower operational costs, was expected to help the airline penetrate new markets. However, the low ticket sales, with fewer than 6,000 seats sold, made it clear that the route was not viable.

Competition from Etihad Airways, already operating between the two cities, contributed to the route’s failure. Etihad’s ability to match Wizz Air’s low fares while offering superior service, including meals and larger aircraft, attracted passengers seeking added comfort. As a result, Wizz Air could not secure the passenger demand it needed to sustain the service.

While the Milan-Abu Dhabi cancellation is a setback, Wizz Air remains committed to the A321XLR’s potential. Despite delays in the aircraft’s rollout, the airline sees long-term value in its fuel efficiency and range. The A321XLR opens up possibilities for routes that are typically difficult to serve with traditional narrowbody planes.

Looking forward, Wizz Air aims to grow its presence in emerging markets such as India and the Middle East, where demand for affordable long-haul flights is rising. The airline’s low-cost model aligns well with these markets, where budget-conscious travelers seek direct connections to Europe.
