Alaska Airlines Bets Big on Europe in 2026

Alaska Airlines is preparing a bold leap into Europe with nonstop flights from Seattle beginning in 2026. The airline plans to add direct long-haul service to either Rome or Madrid. This move reflects its growing ambition to transform Seattle into a global hub and expand its international footprint.

Currently, Alaska Airlines operates within North America and the Pacific. However, with its recent acquisition of Hawaiian Airlines, it now targets transatlantic growth. Although it lacks key joint venture partnerships, Alaska Airlines aims to build new alliances to enhance global connectivity.

The airline has already mapped out plans to launch two new long-haul routes every year. By 2030, it intends to operate at least twelve international flights. Alaska Airlines sees high demand for European travel from the U.S., especially during summer. The airline wants to attract those passengers by offering convenient options from Seattle.

Rome and Madrid have emerged as the top choices for Alaska’s first European route. Rome offers historical appeal, tourism demand, and easier landing rights than London. Meanwhile, Madrid serves as a growing travel hub and connects well to southern Europe. Both cities provide strong potential for Alaska Airlines to compete and grow.

Challenges still exist. Alaska Airlines does not yet offer premium cabins comparable to larger international carriers. Competing airlines from the East Coast also dominate transatlantic markets. However, Alaska plans to upgrade its fleet and strengthen its position through strategic alliances within the Oneworld network.

The airline’s Mileage Plan loyalty program and increasing demand for leisure travel provide a strong foundation. As Alaska Airlines prepares for its 2026 European debut, it enters a new chapter in global aviation. If executed well, this expansion will establish Alaska Airlines as a serious player on international routes.
