Fly Brussels, Heal the Planet: A Bold Step to Cut Carbon and Restore Nature

Brussels Airlines has partnered with climate and conservation experts to restore Flanders’ largest peatland ecosystem. This bold effort not only supports local biodiversity but also slashes carbon emissions effectively. Moreover, the project aligns with Lufthansa Group’s broader strategy for sustainable air travel.

The Valley of the Zwarte Beek, located in Belgium, faces serious environmental threats due to decades of land drainage. Consequently, carbon once locked underground now enters the atmosphere, worsening climate change. To reverse this, Brussels Airlines helps rewet these peatlands, which immediately cuts harmful CO₂ release.

Through this local restoration, passengers directly reduce their environmental impact. While most offset programs remain vague, this initiative delivers visible progress. Flyers contribute by choosing sustainable travel options, which fuel peatland recovery and environmental health. In addition, their contributions create long-term climate benefits across Europe.

Brussels Airlines started the project in early 2025, restoring seven hectares in Meldert. This area alone will eliminate 72 tons of carbon emissions each year. Because of this clear impact, more travelers now support the airline’s green fares and climate programs.

The peatlands also support rare plants and endangered species. So, by restoring this land, Brussels Airlines protects vital biodiversity. The ecosystem becomes stronger, holding more water and reducing flood risks during extreme weather.

With the help of partners EcoTree, SQUAKE, and Natuurpunt, Brussels Airlines ensures transparent monitoring and measurable results. This teamwork shows how aviation can evolve into a climate-conscious industry.

Ultimately, the Valley of the Zwarte Beek project proves that targeted, local action drives real change. Brussels Airlines empowers passengers to support sustainability while traveling. As environmental concerns grow, this initiative offers a meaningful path forward.
