United Airlines is transforming U.S. aviation this summer with a bold new route to Nuuk, Greenland. Notably, this will be the only nonstop flight from the United States to Greenland. The airline will fly twice weekly from Newark, linking travelers to Greenland’s new international airport. As a result, exploring the Arctic just became easier. United Airlines strengthens its global footprint while redefining long-haul travel.
Meanwhile, other airlines are making ambitious moves. For example, Southwest Airlines plans to cross the Atlantic for the first time. The airline eyes Reykjavik, Iceland, as its likely European entry point. Moreover, its partnership with Icelandair supports this leap. Southwest’s 737 Max 8 aircraft makes flights from hubs like Baltimore and Nashville possible.
In addition, Breeze Airways earned clearance for international routes. Although it hasn’t revealed destinations yet, its A220-300 jets allow flights up to 3,000 miles. However, the airline still needs ETOPS certification before flying over oceans.
Travelers returning to the U.S. can also expect smoother reentry. Customs and Border Protection upgraded eight major airports with facial recognition technology. Consequently, passengers don’t need to show passports anymore. This innovation reduces waiting time by 25%. Additionally, the system complements existing programs like Global Entry and Mobile Passport Control.
Furthermore, Alaska Airlines boosted its seasonal network and improved its cabins. For instance, it added flights between Sacramento and Anchorage. Simultaneously, the airline upgraded premium seating with USB-C ports, leg rests, and more space.
JSX also expanded its network across Southern California. Starting June 19, it will link Monterey to Burbank, Orange County, and Carlsbad. The airline also added flights from Carlsbad to Reno. Therefore, JSX continues to target travelers seeking luxury short-haul flights.
However, not all news is positive. Delta Air Lines ended its partnership with Hawaiian Airlines. The change aligns with Hawaiian’s move to Alaska Air Group and its shift to the Oneworld alliance. Silver Airways filed for bankruptcy in 2023 and shut down afterward. Consequently, passengers must seek refunds through cards or agents.
Lastly, Miami International Airport approved a $600 million expansion. The plan includes six new gates and better baggage facilities. Construction starts this summer and finishes by 2029.
