Air Canada halted all travel services after over 10,000 flight attendants walked out. Consequently, 130,000 passengers daily faced severe disruptions. Negotiations collapsed after months of tension with the Canadian Union of Public Employees. Therefore, the government ordered binding arbitration to resolve the impasse and restart flights quickly.

The airline canceled 196 flights on August 15. However, by August 16, Air Canada had grounded nearly 95 percent of its schedule. As a result, operations froze worldwide, stranding passengers across domestic and international routes. Meanwhile, families, businesses, and tourists scrambled to secure alternative connections as airlines struggled with the surge in demand.

The labor dispute started weeks earlier. Although workers demanded wage adjustments and better conditions, Air Canada rejected proposals and declared an impasse. Instead, the breakdown triggered strike action and prompted the airline to issue a lockout notice. Consequently, the situation escalated rapidly, forcing the government to intervene to protect supply chains and travelers.

Officials directed the dispute to binding arbitration, aiming to secure a final settlement. Furthermore, the arbitration process requires both sides to accept the decision. However, the airline expects normal operations to resume only after several days. Therefore, passengers continue to experience canceled flights, missed connections, and costly delays.

The airline introduced goodwill policies to soften the blow. In addition, it offered rebooking options, travel credits, and refunds. Still, many travelers remain uncertain about their journeys. Moreover, with limited seats available on other carriers, some passengers now face long waits for their next flight.

The disruption highlights the fragility of air travel during labor disputes. Consequently, Air Canada must rebuild trust with travelers while addressing workforce concerns. Finally, although the resolution may stabilize operations, its long-term effects on labor relations remain uncertain.
