ITA Airways is reshaping its future with a major alliance shift. Therefore, the airline will leave SkyTeam and join Star Alliance by 2026. Consequently, this bold move will expand its global reach and improve benefits for frequent travelers. Moreover, the shift will strengthen ITA Airways in Italy and position it as a key international player.
Through its integration with the Lufthansa Group, ITA Airways will connect passengers with Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian, and Brussels Airlines. Additionally, this expansion will allow customers to enjoy more flights, smoother travel, and stronger loyalty rewards. As a result, Star Alliance’s global network will give Volare members more flexibility and better earning opportunities across continents.
However, this transition requires ending some long-standing partnerships. For example, ITA Airways will close its frequent flyer relationship with Delta Air Lines on September 1, 2025. Furthermore, partnerships with Korean Air and Virgin Atlantic will also end in late 2025. Instead, these changes will clear the path for stronger new alliances within Star Alliance.
The Volare program is central to this transformation. Thus, members will earn and redeem miles with more partners, including United Airlines. In addition, starting in July 2025, elite Volare members will also gain extra privileges with Lufthansa Group carriers. Consequently, these changes will improve travel choices and create more valuable loyalty rewards for passengers.
Overall, this shift will help ITA Airways compete more effectively in the global market. Therefore, the airline will expand its long-haul network, improve connections, and deliver stronger customer experiences. Ultimately, with Star Alliance membership, ITA Airways travelers will enjoy wider opportunities, richer benefits, and a more connected journey across the world.
