Kenya Airways has taken a major step in eco-friendly aviation by flying its first flight with 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). As a result, this effort reduces greenhouse gas emissions by up to 85%, making the airline a leader in Africa’s green aviation movement. By using SAF, Kenya Airways strengthens its commitment to responsible air travel.
Moreover, the inaugural SAF flight operated between Nairobi and Cape Town, proving sustainable fuel works in practice. The airline converts waste materials, like used cooking oil, into Hydroprocessed Esters and Fatty Acids (HEFA). This SAF flight forms part of the SkyTeam Aviation Challenge 2025, which promotes solutions that lower aviation’s environmental impact. Kenya Airways collaborates with government agencies, local innovators, and global partners to expand SAF production in Kenya by 2026.
