LATAM and UNESCO Take the Amazon Further: Sustainable Tourism Reaches New Heights

LATAM Airlines Peru drives a new wave of sustainable tourism in Peru. Moreover, the airline collaborates with UNESCO Peru to expand its Segundo Vuelo program. Consequently, this initiative repurposes airline materials into handcrafted products while empowering indigenous women. Now, it includes the first Amazonian women’s craft association, creating economic opportunities and preserving cultural heritage.

Thirteen Kukama Kukamiria women from the Fibra y Arte del Marañón association craft textiles from unused airline items. They transform old uniforms and blankets into vibrant, functional pieces. By combining ancestral weaving techniques with sustainable practices, the women strengthen their community roles and gain financial independence. Additionally, the project showcases Peru’s growing position in eco-friendly and community-based tourism.

Since 2018, the Segundo Vuelo program has expanded across Latin America. Therefore, LATAM Airlines Peru partners with UNESCO to extend the initiative to Ecuador, Colombia, Brazil, and Chile. The program reduces waste while encouraging communities to develop artisanal enterprises. Through this partnership, Amazonian craftsmanship gains international recognition, blending cultural identity with responsible production. Furthermore, materials like chambira and aguaje fibers come from reforested areas, ensuring sustainability at every step.

The inclusion of these women marks a milestone for both the initiative and the local community. Their work reflects resilience, creativity, and cultural storytelling. Living along the Río Marañón, they gain access to broader markets, formalize their association, and attract tourism to the Amazon. Moreover, this support highlights women’s crucial role in sustainable development and tourism growth.

LATAM Airlines Peru’s program demonstrates how businesses can unite economic, social, and environmental goals. By merging circular economy practices with cultural preservation, the initiative creates lasting local impact. Consequently, travelers engaging with these crafts contribute directly to the sustainability and empowerment of Amazonian communities.

The program continues to expand, inspiring responsible tourism across Peru and Latin America. Through collaboration, innovation, and cultural pride, LATAM Airlines Peru proves that sustainable travel can transform lives and protect heritage.
