IndiGo Faces Severe Flight Chaos Amid Winter Travel Rush

IndiGo, India’s leading airline, faces intense disruption as massive flight delays and cancellations hit major airports. Consequently, passengers experienced long queues, sudden schedule changes, and rising uncertainty during one of the busiest travel periods of the year. The airline struggled to maintain its usual on-time performance, highlighting deep operational challenges.

Moreover, the disruption continued for two consecutive days, with IndiGo cancelling hundreds of flights and delaying many others. As a result, the airline’s punctuality dropped to just a third of scheduled flights on December 2. These issues occurred amid rising passenger demand, winter weather conditions, and operational adjustments required by new crew rostering rules introduced in November. Specifically, the updated rules increased mandatory rest periods for pilots and cabin crew while limiting nighttime flying, forcing airlines to rethink schedules.

At major hubs such as Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru, dozens of cancellations were reported. Similarly, other airports, including Hyderabad, Kolkata, and Srinagar, experienced significant delays. Additionally, the airline faced strain due to higher staff attrition, as pilots and crew moved to other carriers during this critical period. Therefore, IndiGo adjusted schedules to ease pressure on the remaining staff and restore normal operations.

Authorities are now reviewing IndiGo’s disruption, focusing on crew planning, airspace limitations, and airport-side constraints. Meanwhile, the airline committed to improving crew allocation, coordinating with air traffic control, and enhancing airport turnaround efficiency. Consequently, the coming days will test IndiGo’s ability to regain passenger confidence and ensure smooth winter travel across its extensive network.

Ultimately, as the holiday season progresses, passengers and regulators watch closely. IndiGo must stabilize operations quickly to prevent further travel chaos and maintain its market reputation.
