Ethiopian Airlines has achieved a significant milestone in aircraft maintenance by completing a full strip-and-paint programme on two of its Airbus A350-900 aircraft. This achievement, which is the first of its kind in Africa for this aircraft type, highlights the airline’s growing technical capabilities. As a result, Ethiopian Airlines strengthens its operational independence and ensures better fleet readiness for future operations.
The programme, revealed on December 26, was executed using Ethiopian Airlines’ own maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facilities. These facilities, which include a specialized aircraft paint hangar, primarily support the airline’s fleet. However, they also remain available for external airline customers seeking similar services. By handling this complex task internally, Ethiopian Airlines gains greater control over maintenance schedules, thus improving aircraft availability and reducing downtime.
Furthermore, internal maintenance capabilities are increasingly viewed as a strategic asset for any airline. By managing essential tasks in-house, Ethiopian Airlines can reduce its reliance on external providers. This autonomy not only allows for better fleet management but also ensures more reliable service for passengers. As a result, travelers can expect fewer disruptions due to extended maintenance cycles, contributing to a more dependable travel experience.
In addition, Ethiopian Airlines is expanding its MRO capabilities to support third-party airlines. This move, which complements the airline’s internal needs, also opens up commercial opportunities. The successful completion of the Airbus A350-900 strip-and-paint programme enhances Ethiopian Airlines’ standing as a key player in Africa’s aviation infrastructure, which further supports both regional and international travel.
