American Airlines has announced further adjustments to its route offerings at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, with five nonstop routes set to be cut in October. This decision is part of a series of route reductions that have been implemented since November, totaling more than 20 discontinued routes.
Effective October, year-round services to Las Vegas, New Orleans, and Orlando will cease, along with seasonal flights to Palm Springs, California, and Reno, Nevada. The airline’s spokesperson mentioned that these changes are a result of an ongoing assessment of their network, emphasizing that American will maintain access to its extensive global network of over 350 destinations through one-stop connections for customers.
American Airlines is actively communicating with affected passengers and is planning to enhance seat capacity on routes from Austin to its key hubs during the winter season. Following these cancellations, there will no longer be direct flights between Austin and Palm Springs or Reno. However, alternative airlines like Southwest Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Spirit Airlines, and Allegiant Air will continue to offer nonstop services to Orlando and Las Vegas from Austin.
Since November, American has discontinued a total of 27 nonstop routes from Austin, including international destinations like Montego Bay, Jamaica, and Cozumel, Mexico. In addition, the airline recently announced the termination of nonstop flights between Austin and Indianapolis starting August 6.
Despite the adjustments, American Airlines remains a significant player at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, accounting for approximately 21% of passenger traffic in 2024. This positions them as the second-largest airline at the airport, trailing behind Southwest Airlines. Notably, American’s passenger share has seen a decline from 26% in 2022.
In the past couple of years, American Airlines introduced 14 new nonstop routes from Austin, including the service to Palm Springs. However, eleven of these routes have since been canceled. In a similar move, Allegiant Air is also streamlining its operations at Austin and discontinuing several routes, as the airline plans to wind down its base operations at the airport in January.
These adjustments reflect the dynamic nature of the airline industry, with carriers continually evaluating and optimizing their route networks to align with changing demand and operational considerations. Passengers are advised to stay updated on route changes and alternative travel options as airlines adapt to evolving market conditions.
