Southern New England experienced a deluge of rainfall over the weekend, with some areas seeing up to an inch and a half of precipitation. Despite the downpours, no significant damage or flooding was reported in the region.
Communities south of Boston, including Rockland, Hanover, Marshfield, and Bridgewater, bore the brunt of the storm, whereas Boston and its surrounding areas received about half an inch to three-quarters of an inch of rain. According to meteorologist Torry Dooley from the National Weather Service, these summer thunderstorms are considered typical for this time of the year in southern New England.
While the weather may have disrupted travel plans for some, a Delta Airlines flight from Boston to Rome had to return to Logan International Airport after encountering lightning. Fortunately, the aircraft landed safely, and passengers were accommodated on alternative flights promptly.
As the region braces for the peak of the Atlantic Hurricane season, officials advise residents to review their emergency plans and stay informed about potential weather disturbances. Tropical Storm Debby, gathering strength in the Gulf of Mexico, poses a threat to the southeastern United States, with Florida already experiencing flooding and power outages.
In Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina, states of emergency have been declared in anticipation of the storm’s impact. Flight operations at major airports, including Miami and Atlanta, were significantly disrupted, causing a ripple effect across the country, leading to delays and cancellations at Logan International Airport.
Looking ahead, Boston is expected to see clearing skies with temperatures reaching the low 90s before settling back into the mid- to upper 70s later in the week. While the chance of scattered showers remains, residents are advised to stay weather-aware as thunderstorms could develop.
As we navigate the unpredictable nature of weather patterns, staying prepared and informed is key to ensuring our safety and well-being in the face of Mother Nature’s forces.
