British Airways Flights Hit Hard by Air Traffic Control Disruptions

British Airways (BA) has revealed that nearly half of its flights have been disrupted this year due to ongoing issues with the UK’s air traffic control system. The airline stated that 42% of its services have been affected by interventions from Britain’s air traffic control provider, NATS, in 2024. This represents a significant increase compared to 2019, when only 24% of BA flights experienced similar disruptions. You can find more information about British Airways and its operations on their official website: British Airways.

BA highlighted that the level of disruption it has faced is considerably higher than that experienced by its European rivals, including Air France, Lufthansa, and KLM. The airline attributed the problems to a staffing crisis at NATS, which has struggled to recruit and train enough personnel to manage the increasing air traffic volume. In a message to its staff, BA detailed how heavy downpours on September 26th, 2024, exacerbated the situation, as NATS failed to cope with the challenging weather conditions. The airline had secured an extension to operations at Heathrow Airport to accommodate passengers, but many of its aircraft were denied timely clearance for departure, leading to cancellations and delays. BA described the disruption as “one of the toughest days” for the airline and its customers in recent months. The airline acknowledged that it has been a “difficult summer” and emphasized its commitment to working with NATS to improve the resilience of the air traffic control system.

The ongoing disruptions have drawn criticism from other airlines as well. Ryanair CEO Michael O’Leary has repeatedly called for the resignation of NATS CEO Martin Rolfe, while easyJet CEO Johan Lundgren has demanded that the NATS board take action. NATS has acknowledged the challenges it faces in recruiting and training staff and has pledged to work with airlines to minimize disruptions.
