While North Korea is reopening its borders to tourists, citizens of the United States remain prohibited from visiting the country.
The U.S. State Department has enforced a ban on the use of American passports for travel to, within, or through North Korea, citing a \”continuing serious risk of arrest and long-term detention of U.S. nationals.\”
This prohibition was established in 2017 after the death of Otto Warmbier, an American who was imprisoned in North Korea for over a year and returned home in a comatose condition. The ban has been consistently renewed since its inception, with the most recent Level 4 advisory issued by the State Department last summer.
