Friday marks National Cheap Flights Day (who would have guessed?). As summer ends, the transition into fall signifies a shoulder season for travel, presenting numerous deals for those who can adjust their schedules accordingly.
Historically, the timeframe from September (after the Labor Day rush subsides) until mid-November (before the Thanksgiving travel surge begins) has been characterized by low demand among travelers. Although the prolonged impact of remote work stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic has somewhat altered this trend, the upcoming months generally offer more affordable travel options.
Here are some pricing trends to consider if you plan an off-peak vacation.
Autumn Airfare
Data from Expedia indicates that airfare during fall is usually 10% lower than summer ticket prices. The online booking platform suggests that fares are expected to decrease in the coming months, with potential savings of up to 15% by flying on Mondays or Saturdays.
“Regardless of where you’re headed, fall presents an excellent opportunity for travel, and there’s still time to organize a trip. The week following Labor Day offers optimal domestic airfare deals, while October 20 is ideal for international flights—and also coincides with leaf-peeping season,” stated Melanie Fish, head of public relations at Expedia Group Brands.
An analysis conducted by Hopper reveals that domestic airfares in September averaged $240, reflecting an 8% decrease compared to September 2023. International flight prices to various destinations also remain favorable.
Autumn Hotel Rates
Since 2019, hotel prices have seen a slight increase; however, they remain reasonable with an average cost of $161 per night according to Hopper.
Expedia reports that several popular destinations—both domestically and internationally—offer attractive deals this fall. U.S. cities like Seattle, Honolulu, and Denver appeal particularly to budget-minded travelers, while Toronto, Santo Domingo, and London are great options for those looking abroad.
Autumn Rental Car Costs
Hopper notes that gas prices have dropped nearly 10% since August 2023 and that car rental rates are stable or slightly decreased; thus making road trips this fall more economical.
Strategies for Securing Optimal Fall Travel Deals
According to Expedia, travelers can take several steps to enhance their budget management:
- Set price alerts for your preferred flights.
- Opt for morning flights as they tend to be cheaper and less prone to delays or cancellations.
- Book refundable hotels; while this might incur a slightly higher cost initially, the additional flexibility will prove beneficial if plans change.
