Typhoon Yagi Tested It, But Hong Kong International Airport Won

Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) showcased its resilience during Super Typhoon Yagi, ensuring smooth operations despite the challenging weather. Through effective communication and rapid action, the airport managed to maintain flight continuity and provide essential services to passengers. Various key systems were deployed to ensure a seamless recovery from the disruptions caused by the storm.

Flight Operations and Recovery Amid Typhoon Challenges

On September 5, HKIA successfully handled 916 flights, with only 50 cancellations. The Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) implemented the Flight Rescheduling Control System, allowing for quick recovery of operations for Hong Kong International Airport. Despite the storm, the airport maintained approximately 80% of its normal capacity, facilitating 778 landings and departures. Passenger Services and Convenience During the Storm

With the No.8 Signal raised, a Queue Ticket System for taxis was introduced, helping passengers avoid long physical waits. Additionally, HKIA set up a temporary rest area with 500 chairs, mobile charging stations, and essential amenities. The Passenger Care Team distributed dry food, bottled water, and blankets to passengers at Hong Kong International Airport, ensuring their comfort.

Support for Airport Staff and Continued Operations

Over 1,000 airport staff remained on duty overnight to support continued operations, with more than 500 making use of rest centers provided by AAHK. Shuttle buses were arranged to transport staff between Tung Chung and the airport. Restaurants and convenience stores extended their hours, ensuring both staff and passengers at Hong Kong International Airport had access to food and necessities throughout the storm.
