Boston Wins Big: United Airlines Names It the Top Domestic Destination for Summer

United Airlines has named Boston its most popular summer destination within its domestic network. Despite removing its only international route from the city, United expanded its operations significantly, adding nearly 20 flights compared to the previous summer.

Boston’s Role in United Airlines’ Network

Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) stood out as United Airlines’ most favored domestic airport this summer. Although United’s overall network is smaller compared to competitors like American Airlines and Delta Air Lines, its performance at BOS was notable. United operated a substantial number of flights to its US-based hubs from Boston.

Flight Operations and Metrics

In July, United Airlines conducted 2,354 flights from BOS to its seven major hubs: Denver International Airport (DEN), Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD), George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH), Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD), and San Francisco International Airport (SFO). The busiest route was BOS-EWR, with 538 flights, offering 82,400 seats. The BOS-ORD route followed, with 456 flights and 73,521 seats.

Operational Details and Aircraft Utilized

United utilized a mix of Airbus and Boeing aircraft for these routes, including the A319, A320, 737-700, 737-800, 737 MAX 8, and 737 MAX 9. The BOS-DEN route saw 378 flights, while BOS-SFO had 310 flights. Additionally, BOS-IAH had 300 flights and BOS-IAD had 248 flights. Last summer, United operated 2,336 flights from BOS, indicating a modest increase in flights this year.

Changes in United Airlines’ International Operations

United previously operated a route to London Heathrow Airport (LHR) from Boston, which it discontinued in October 2023. Despite this, LHR remained United’s most popular international destination this summer. This shift highlights United’s strategic focus on enhancing its domestic network while adjusting its international routes.
