Malaysia Airlines’ New Carbon Credits Initiative for Sustainable Travel

Malaysia Airlines is stepping up its sustainability game with a new carbon offset initiative. By introducing carbon credits from the Kuamut Rainforest Conservation Project, the airline becomes Malaysia’s first nature-based carbon initiative to be certified. This program offers passengers and corporate clients a way to reduce their carbon footprint.

Malaysia Airlines Partners with Kuamut Rainforest Project

The Kuamut project, located in Sabah’s Tongod and Kinabatangan regions, protects 83,381 hectares of tropical forest. In partnership with the Sabah Forestry Department, Yayasan Sabah, and Permian Global (Malaysia), the project aims to prevent the release of 16 million tonnes of CO2e over 30 years.

Carbon Credits to Boost Sustainability

Certified by the Verra Voluntary Carbon Standard (VCS), the project reduces CO2e emissions by about 500,000 tonnes annually. It also preserves key habitats for endangered species like elephants, orangutans, and rare birds, strengthening conservation efforts.

Malaysia Airlines Expands Carbon Offset Program

Malaysia Airlines launched its voluntary carbon offset program in June 2023. Now, the airline is extending the initiative to corporate clients. Both passengers and businesses can choose to offset their emissions by supporting the Kuamut Rainforest Conservation Project through the airline’s booking platform or MHcorporate portal.

Supporting Local Communities with Green Solutions

Beyond reducing emissions, the project improves local communities’ lives. Malaysia Airlines helps drive economic development by supporting sustainable employment, education, and healthcare. This aligns with the airline’s commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
