China Southern Expands with New Australia Flights

China Southern is boosting its presence in the Australian market by adding two new routes from Beijing Daxing Airport. These new flights, starting in December 2024, aim to meet the growing demand for travel between China and Australia. This move marks a key step in restoring international air travel after the pandemic, especially in the competitive China-Australia market.

On December 13, China Southern will begin flying to Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport. The route will operate four times weekly with Airbus A330-300 aircraft. Passengers can expect a premium experience with both business and economy seating. The following day, the airline will launch another route to Melbourne Airport, with three weekly flights. These routes will initially run for 10 weeks to assess demand.

This expansion adds to China Southern’s strong presence in the Australian market. The airline already offers connections from cities like Guangzhou and Shenzhen, providing extensive options for travelers between China and Australia. During this period, China Southern will offer nearly 18,800 seats between the two countries. This represents 86% of its pre-pandemic capacity.

Other airlines are also expanding, creating more competition. Air China, for example, has increased its Sydney services, adding to the competitive landscape. However, China Southern’s new routes from Beijing Daxing are designed to capture a significant share of the renewed travel demand.

As the 10-week season progresses, China Southern will likely assess the performance of these flights. They may extend or adjust the routes based on demand. With growing demand for leisure, business, and student travel, China Southern’s commitment to flexible and reliable travel will strengthen its position in the China-Australia market.
