Newark Liberty Airport Airfares Surge: The Largest Jump Since 2022

Newark Liberty International Airport is experiencing the steepest rise in airfare among the largest U.S. airports. Since 2022, airfare at Newark Airport has surged by 30%, outpacing all other major airports in the country. This dramatic increase sets Newark apart as the airport with the highest airfare rise among the 74 largest U.S. airports by passenger volume.

Significant Airfare Increases at Newark Airport

From the first quarter of 2022 to the first quarter of 2024, the cost of a ticket at Newark Airport has climbed from $195 to over $250. The most significant hike occurred between 2022 and 2023, with domestic airfare rising 21% from $331 to $400 for an average roundtrip. From 2023 to 2024, airfare continued to climb, increasing by 8% to an average of $433 for domestic roundtrips.

In contrast, Metro Oakland International Airport in California, which had the second-highest airfare increase, saw a 10% rise between 2023 and 2024. The average roundtrip price at Metro Oakland was $304, significantly lower than Newark’s 2024 average. Despite Newark’s high airfare, John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York, with the third-highest increase of 27%, also shows high prices, making it less advantageous for those seeking lower fares.

Newark Liberty International Airport recently gained recognition for its new Terminal A, named the best terminal globally. However, the airport continues to face challenges, including high rates of flight delays and cancellations and a high volume of TSA complaints among large U.S. airports.

On a more positive note, several large U.S. airports have seen a decrease in airfare. Airports in Florida, such as Miami International, Palm Beach International, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International, and Southwest Florida International, experienced reductions in fares, with decreases ranging from 4.9% to 8.9% between 2023 and 2024.
