Aeromexico, one of Mexico’s largest airlines, continues to experience significant growth in international demand despite facing challenges in the domestic market. In August 2024, Aeromexico transported a total of 2.296 million passengers, showing a slight decline of 1.1% compared to August 2023. However, the key highlight was the 10.4% increase in international passengers, offsetting the 5.9% drop in domestic travelers. The airline’s overall performance was buoyed by its strong global operations, while the domestic sector faced headwinds.
International Demand Boosts Aeromexico’s Performance
Aeromexico’s international demand continues to be a key growth driver. The airline’s total capacity, measured by Available Seat Kilometers (ASKs), grew by 7.9%, driven by a 13.3% increase in international ASKs. On the domestic front, capacity dropped by 2%. In terms of demand, measured by Revenue Passenger Kilometers (RPKs), Aeromexico saw an 8.5% rise, with international demand up by an impressive 14.6%. This upward trajectory in international demand showcases the airline’s strength in catering to global travelers.
Domestic Market Faces Declines
While Aeromexico’s international demand soared, the domestic market struggled with a 5.9% drop in passengers and a 3% reduction in RPKs. This decline was reflected in the airline’s domestic load factor, which decreased by 0.9 percentage points, landing at 86.2%. The domestic ASK figure also fell by 2%, indicating weaker demand and reduced capacity within the Mexican market.
Improved Load Factor Shows Efficiency
Despite the mixed results, Aeromexico managed to improve its overall load factor to 88.2%, a 0.5 percentage point increase compared to August 2023. This was largely due to the international sector, where the load factor rose by 1 percentage point to 89.1%. The domestic load factor, however, reflected ongoing challenges, declining slightly.
Cumulative Performance to Date in 2024
By the end of August 2024, Aeromexico had transported over 17.1 million passengers, marking a 3.6% increase year-over-year. International passenger traffic surged by 17.9%, while domestic traffic experienced a 2.1% decline. Total ASKs for the year increased by 9.8%, reaching 38.43 billion, and total RPKs rose by 13.4%, amounting to 33.38 billion. The cumulative load factor for the year stood at 86.9%, showcasing a 2.7 percentage point improvement.
