Air Canada has announced changes to its Basic and Comfort economy fare policies, effective January 3, 2025. These updates aim to streamline the airline’s pricing structure, aligning with other Canadian airlines while clarifying fare categories for travelers.
For North America and Sun destinations, travelers booking Basic fares can bring one small personal item, like a purse or laptop bag. However, larger items, such as roller bags or duffel bags, must be checked before security. The standard fees for checked bags are $35 for the first and $50 for the second. Additionally, if passengers bring oversized carry-ons to the gate, they must check them, paying a $65 fee per item.
Importantly, passengers with mobility aids, medical devices, or child strollers will not pay carry-on fees. Furthermore, frequent flyers, including Status members, Star Alliance Gold members, and Aeroplan premium cardholders, will enjoy one free carry-on bag and other benefits.
Basic fare customers will receive a seat assignment at check-in. Starting January 21, 2025, however, if passengers wish to change their seat, they must pay a fee based on their selection. Air Canada will prioritize seating for families and passengers needing special assistance, ensuring they are seated together. Therefore, benefits for Status members and credit card holders will remain unchanged.
In addition, Comfort fare passengers will enjoy an increased baggage allowance. Starting January 3, 2025, Comfort travelers flying globally can check two bags for free, up from the current allowance of one. These updates bring clarity for travelers and maintain essential benefits for loyal customers. As a result, Air Canada’s changes ensure a smoother travel experience for all passengers.
