Air France flight AF750, a Boeing 777-300ER, was forced to return to Paris Orly after a passenger lost their mobile phone. The aircraft had already reached Portugal’s coastline on its way to Pointe-à-Pitre, Guadeloupe, when the crew decided to turn back due to potential fire risks. The flight had 375 passengers and crew on board.
The cabin crew and passengers conducted a thorough search but failed to locate the phone. Fearing that the device could be stuck in a seat’s reclining mechanism, the pilots made the decision to return. Lithium-ion batteries, which power mobile phones, can ignite if crushed or overheated. Airlines take these threats seriously due to the dangers of in-flight fires.
Before landing, the aircraft circled in a holding pattern to allow for a final inspection. Despite efforts, the phone remained missing. Two hours after takeoff, the aircraft landed safely at Orly. Air France planned to recover the phone and complete safety checks before resuming the journey.
Lithium-ion batteries have become a major concern in aviation. A similar incident recently occurred on a Hong Kong Airlines flight, where a power bank caused a fire in an overhead bin. Crew members reacted swiftly and extinguished the flames before they spread.
To enhance safety, airlines have introduced stricter rules. Some now prohibit passengers from charging power banks in-flight, while others ban storing them in overhead compartments. Singapore Airlines and Malaysia Airlines will soon enforce these restrictions. Passengers must stay cautious and follow guidelines to prevent potential hazards.
The Air France incident highlights the risks of electronic devices on flights. Airlines continue refining safety protocols, but passengers must also handle their devices responsibly. By staying alert, travelers can contribute to a safer flying experience.
