Air India faced a devastating tragedy on June 12 when flight 171 crashed, killing 260 people. This shocking event raised serious questions about safety procedures and aircraft technology. The recent preliminary report sheds new light on this heartbreaking incident, revealing unexpected technical and human factors.
Investigators found that just seconds after takeoff, both fuel-control switches suddenly moved to the cutoff position. This unexpected move starved the engines of fuel, causing a rapid power loss. Although the switches flipped back to run, it was already too late. One engine started to regain power, but the other failed to recover before the crash. Both switches were later found in the run position at the crash site.
At the time, the co-pilot flew the aircraft, and the captain monitored the systems. Shockingly, the pilots had passed preflight tests and had enough rest before the flight. The aircraft carried no dangerous goods, and weather conditions remained clear. Fuel tests confirmed that no contamination had occurred.
Moreover, investigators discovered that a ram air turbine was deployed soon after takeoff. This backup system usually activates only during a complete power failure. The report also mentioned that the thrust levers stayed forward until the impact, even though they appeared near idle afterward.
Air India’s maintenance history revealed missed inspections. The US Federal Aviation Administration had earlier issued a bulletin advising checks on the fuel control switches. However, Air India did not perform these inspections because they were not mandatory. After several Boeing incidents worldwide, trust in aircraft systems has been shaken.
The investigation continues as officials analyze flight recorder data and examine engine components. Air India now faces immense pressure to restore public confidence and improve safety standards. While aviation remains the safest travel mode, this tragedy reminds us of hidden risks and the importance of strict maintenance.
