Air India Flight Triggers Hijack Alert, Sparks Panic

An Air India flight from Delhi to Mumbai sparked a major security scare on January 27, 2025. The flight, AI2957, triggered a hijack alert shortly after takeoff. The distress signal went to Delhi’s Air Traffic Control (ATC), suggesting a potential hijacking.

The aircraft, an Airbus A320neo previously used by Vistara, carried 126 passengers. It left Indira Gandhi International Airport at 8:40 PM. Soon after takeoff, the flight sent a squawk code “7500,” signaling unlawful interference. This prompted a quick response from aviation security.

Delhi ATC alerted the Indian Air Force and Mumbai airport authorities. By 9:30 PM, Mumbai had activated full security measures, deploying the National Security Guard (NSG) and local police. The plane landed in a remote bay. Security teams boarded and conducted inspections.

Investigations later revealed that a technical malfunction caused the hijack signal, not unlawful actions. The pilot immediately informed ATC, explaining the situation. However, authorities kept security measures until they fully assessed the situation.

This incident highlights India’s effective aviation security response system. However, it also points to the rising number of false threats in the aviation sector. The government has enacted stricter regulations and penalties for false alarms.

While this false alarm caused no harm, it emphasizes the need for stronger safeguards against technical glitches and malicious threats.
