Travelers can soon enjoy non-stop flights between Mumbai and Melbourne as Air India confirms its return on September 14, 2025. This move strengthens direct connectivity between India and Australia, benefiting business and leisure travelers.
Currently, Air India operates three weekly flights on this route. However, the airline will suspend services from March 29, 2025, due to fleet expansion and operational adjustments. The last direct flight from Mumbai will depart on March 28, 2025. Although the suspension raised concerns, Air India has assured travelers that this is a temporary measure.
When flights resume in September, Air India will offer three weekly flights with optimized schedules. The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner will continue to serve this route, ensuring a comfortable journey. Departures from Mumbai will be at 1:35 AM IST, reaching Melbourne by 7:00 PM local time. The return flight will leave Melbourne at 9:00 PM local time, arriving in Mumbai at 3:00 AM IST.
Air India’s temporary suspension aligns with strategic adjustments in its global network. The airline is expanding its fleet, upgrading in-flight services, and optimizing aircraft utilization. Seasonal demand also plays a role, as travel between India and Australia peaks from October to March. The airline is using this window to enhance its operations before relaunching the route.
During this break, passengers must rely on connecting flights through hubs like Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. This could mean longer travel times and added layovers. However, Air India’s confirmation of direct flights in September reassures travelers.
With a growing fleet and improved services, Air India is strengthening its presence in international travel. The Mumbai-Melbourne route remains a vital connection, ensuring seamless and efficient travel between the two cities.
