Air New Zealand’s 2026 London Relaunch Via Los Angeles

Air New Zealand plans to return to London in 2026, but with a twist. The airline will not offer a direct, non-stop flight. Instead, it will stop in Los Angeles. This decision follows Air New Zealand’s aim to optimize its Boeing 787 fleet for the route.

The airline secured daily slots for a London route at Gatwick Airport, initially set for summer 2025. However, aircraft availability issues delayed the plans. It now targets a 2026 launch. Boeing delivery delays and Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engine issues have caused setbacks. Air New Zealand currently operates 14 Boeing 787s, but some are inactive due to engine problems. The airline expects to receive more aircraft in 2026 to support its plans.

Despite the delay, Air New Zealand remains committed to flying to London. The airline previously operated flights to Heathrow with its Boeing 777s until 2020, when low occupancy forced the suspension of the route. The new flights will use a 787 instead of a 777, reflecting changes in passenger demand and aircraft availability.

Los Angeles will likely serve as the stopover point for the flights, similar to earlier routes. Although the airline considered other options, including New York JFK, Los Angeles is the preferred choice.

Air New Zealand faces challenges with aircraft availability but remains determined to restart the London service. The timeline depends on securing the necessary aircraft, but the airline plans to begin the service in 2026 once fleet issues are resolved.
